Get to know: Wende Kinch, Senior Manager, Fleet and Procurement Services

What do you do for the university?

I oversee the inventory operations for Building operations. This includes tools, equipment, parts and supplies required for our trades. In addition, I oversee the service agreements with third party suppliers and internal departments. Finally, I manage the Building Operations Fleet of vehicles and equipment including the garage.

What makes you laugh?

I enjoy a good comedian, harmless prank, and especially children. They really do say the darndest things!

Who inspires you, and why?

My sons inspire me everyday. They inspire me to be the best version of myself and to not settle. I see the impact that it makes on their lives and mine.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned?

To be curious at all times. Do not assume, do not judge, but to remain in the curious state to seek understanding. This allows me to step into someone else’s reality and see their perspective.

What is your favourite song or book?

Dance with my Father by Luther Vandross because it reminds me of my Father and how we used to dance together.

What’s your favourite or ideal vacation spot?

In the Caribbean, near the water because I love the culture and the food and the people. I need to visit all the islands so I can choose a favourite.

How do you like to recharge?

I enjoy dancing. Whether on a dance floor, in my living room, or at Zumba classes, I love music and dancing recharges me.

What is your vision ?

My vision is to embrace the opportunity at UBC to create a world-leading procurement function within Building Operations. I love the people here and we are having so much fun doing it.

What quality do you most admire in a leader?

Humility because we’re not all perfect and it’s good to admit when you’re wrong. We’re all trying make work a good place to be and a little humility helps make it better.

For you, what makes UBC different?

The people. They’re accepting, tolerant and fun… and those are building blocks that make great teams work.

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

To invoke happiness with a wave of my hand. A little levity and humour will work until I can get the super power.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I’d like to be remembered as an enabler. Someone who helped others achieve success while making their day more enjoyable.
