Get to know James Heth, Assistant Treasurer, Contracts and Leases in the Treasury Department

What do you do for the university?

I look after leases and licenses on the academic areas of the campus and off-campus, oversee housing loans under the Housing Action Plan, banking and merchant acquirer contracts, and other real property matters like property taxes.

What makes you laugh?

I tend towards low-brow and irreverent humour. I still laugh at Chicken Despacito.

Who inspires you, and why?

Anyone who is really making an effort to do something.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned?

The value of education, personally and to society, can’t be overstated.

What is your favourite song or book?

Short stories by Hemingway.

What’s your favourite or ideal vacation spot?

A log cabin in the mountains.

How do you like to recharge?

Go to a log cabin in the mountains.

What is your vision (personal or for your department)?

I like being part of a team that is ready to take on any challenge, and that describes Treasury.

What quality do you most admire in a leader?

Competence tempered with humility.

For you, what makes UBC different?

I appreciate the long term view that we have to take on all our decisions. It’s inspiring to know that UBC will be here and continue to be making such an important contribution to society for generations to come.

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

I was asked this in my interview for UBC (thanks, Micheal Shakespeare!) I think I said to be able to control time… or fly?
