Snow or sun, you are appreciated

The VPFO does a lot, snow or sun, to keep UBC working. Despite yesterday’s challenges of travelling to campus, working remotely, or by just by preparing our systems on the good days to be resilient enough to handle the tough ones — the VPFO team was here for UBC:

  • Our Facilities team ensured that our heating systems worked and the campus stayed open and remained inviting for all that made it in. Our many building and renovation projects on campus managed the weather impacts on their schedules, and Custodial and Municipal Services teams provided another epic snow response.
  • Our Finance departments continued to operate smoothly and as a result our people were paid on time yesterday as the off-cycle payroll calculations were made on schedule. We also were sure we had the cash on hand to handle payroll, and that our financial services — whether just answering questions or meeting emergency needs — were there for our customers when they needed us.
  • Campus Security and others in Safety & Risk Services monitored and reported on conditions around campus and actively worked to keep us as safe as possible. But they also prepared the campus for bad weather, ensuring the right decisions were made in advance to protect our community.
  • Human Resources, beyond their remote support, coordinated their staff so that there was always at least one person on campus to be a friendly and supportive face if you needed it.
  • Communications & Engagement ensured we continued to connect to each other and our clients.

Yesterday, when the campus was challenged by wind and snow, you showed everyone that we are fully prepared both in our planning and in the moment of need.

I know that you are appreciated across campus and I also want to make certain that you know that too.

Best,

Peter Smailes
