Help UBC create design guidelines for more inclusive washrooms & changing rooms

Last month, Infrastructure Development and Equity & Inclusive office hosted three pop-up open house events to engage with UBC students, faculty, and staff to get a better understanding of the range of experiences and concerns regarding washrooms and changing rooms at UBC. The purpose is to build awareness and seek input about user experiences to support the creation of meaningful guidelines for more inclusive washrooms and changing rooms at UBC.

The three-day event attracted over 300 people at Orchard Commons on January 21, the AMS Student Nest on January 27, and UBC Life Building on January 28. At each of the events, attendees were asked to provide their response and input to two key questions:

  1. What are your experiences using the washrooms at UBC?
  2. What would make washrooms and change rooms more safe, comfortable, and inclusive?

They were also asked to look at several examples of washroom layouts, types of washrooms, washroom signage, and select the option(s) they prefer.

Many topics were surfaced in the open houses, including the need for a variety of washroom configurations, menstrual products, cleanliness, and privacy. The information collected during this initial consultation process is invaluable to us, and we encourage everyone and anyone who would like to share their experiences to reach out to our project team.
