Announcing Helen Yung as the new Comptroller for UBC

The VPFO is pleased to share that Helen Yung will be joining the university as UBC’s new Comptroller, effective June 12, 2023.

Helen joins us from Vancouver Coastal Health, where she has served as a valued senior finance leader for over 20 years, most recently as Executive Director, Controller and Financial Services. Her experience includes leading all aspects of financial management for VCH, including overseeing the controllership function as well as the annual operating budget of over $5 billion.

Helen is a CPA and holds a Master of Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She believes in people-centred leadership, valuing integrity, transparency, and collaboration in her approach to building strategic partnerships and achieving organizational goals.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Finance & Operations, UBC’s Comptroller ensures the university’s financial sustainability by delivering intelligence, planning, and reporting to facilitate decision-making. Our thanks go out to Matt Boydston, who volunteered to bridge this important role for the last six months through the duration of the search process. Matt’s steadfast leadership ensured operational continuity for our people and our commitments, and we are grateful for his tireless efforts. His technical expertise, commitment to the university, and kind and thoughtful approach have earned him the respect of our VP Finance & Operations portfolio, as well as our partners and colleagues across UBC.

Many thanks to the search committee, which included representatives from the university Executive as well as student, faculty, and finance leadership, for their help in selecting Helen to support the VPFO and UBC in this critical role. Welcome Helen!
