Increase in mosquito activity may be attributable to this year’s weather pattern

UBC Facilities is aware that there is currently an increase in mosquito activity due to this summer’s weather pattern. Although, some may find mosquitos pesky because of their biting habit, Facilities does not manage the population of this insect.

The latest Facility Condition Index is available

UBC Facilities has updated the diagrams that shows the condition of UBC Vancouver Point Grey owned buildings as assessed by the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education & Future Skills (formerly Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training) in 2022. These diagrams are augmented by renovations completed to date after that audit.

Okanagan wildfires

The past weeks have been difficult, as many of us watched the wildfire situation developing in the Okanagan and especially around our campus near Kelowna. I want to acknowledge our UBC Okanagan leadership and campus operations teams for pivoting and managing this situation, the first responders and wildfire volunteers, and all of our VPFO teams in Vancouver that have aided in supporting our colleagues in the Okanagan. Thank you for your dedication and hard work, and for supporting one another.

Mobi public bike share network expands into UBC

UBC is enabling the expansion of the City of Vancouver’s Mobi by Shaw Go Bike Share program to the UBC Vancouver Point Grey campus through the installation of five fully-electrified bike share stations. Starting this week, construction will begin for the first two stations at War Memorial Gym and The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.

The Transition Team has a new name —Technical Review Team

The Technical Review team’s mandate includes providing technical feedback and input during the design phases of major projects to ensure that the systems being built and handed over are maintainable for their lifespan and technical guidelines are adhered to (or variances requested and documented). The new name will provide improved clarity on what the team is responsible for, build internal alignment, and better reposition how the team partners and works with our teams within Facilities and UBC Properties Trust.

Wildfires are becoming more prevalent, devastating and enduring in British Columbia, and is a seasonal occupational hazard for many workers. People may feel mild exposure symptoms such as a sore throat, shortness of breath, and irritated eyes. Wildfire smoke may cause headaches and worsening allergies. The level of risk from wildfire smoke exposure depends on various factors.

Alicia Chan joins Capital Financial Reporting as Senior Financial Analyst in UBC Comptroller

Alicia brings diverse experience in financial reporting, long term capital planning and forecasting, interpreting complex financial data and effectively communicating to stakeholders. In her new role, Alicia will focus on the accurate reporting of our capital project funding and Deferred Capital Contributions.
