A message from Frank: Interim reporting structure in the VPFO
As you are aware, Helen Yung’s last day with UBC is approaching (March 31, 2026). We are deeply grateful for her many contributions to the University, as well as for the extended time she’s dedicated to us in her current capacity as Comptroller in order to support a smooth and thoughtful transition.
While we undertake the recruitment process for the AVP Finance, we will transition to an interim reporting structure. During this period, Bradley Klaiber (Senior Director, Accounting & Compliance) and Carolyn Rhee-Thompson (Portfolio Finance Director, VPFO, VPHR) will report to me, and Michael LaPierre (Senior Director, Budget and FP&A) will report to Yale Loh (Treasurer). This interim structure reflects both operational needs and strategic alignment. Bradley is currently leading the year-end close, and the split ensures continuity of support during this critical period, while Michael’s reporting to Yale Loh supports stronger alignment between long-term financial planning and the budget process.
The Finance Officers who currently report to Helen, will report to Bradley Klaiber or Michael LaPierre in the interim. This shift is intended to ensure continuity of support and coordination until the new AVP Finance is in place.
While we will miss Helen’s leadership, we look forward to building on the foundation she has helped create and wish her continued success as she enters in her new chapter.
Thank you for your continued commitment and support during this period of change.
Frank Laezza
Vice-President Finance & Operations
