There are lots of ways to play Tic Tac VPFO, either with a smidgen of competition to keep it interesting or a streamlined version that skips the gameplay elements and focuses solely on sparking conversations. Both ways feature question cards that spark self-reflection and discussion. For example you’ll find, easy questions like:

• Would you rather go somewhere adventurous or somewhere relaxing?
• What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever given or received?
• Would you rather go back in time to meet your ancestors or go into the future to meet your future relatives?

These simple prompts can help us talk about our values at work and get to know each other without being too personal or demanding. So take advantage of this activity to open your team meetings or build some team connection at lunch hour.

Use a computer-generated 10-sided die

Instructions

Standard (Tic Tac Toe) gameplay

Play as two players or two teams. Collect three tiles in a row to win horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Set-up

1. Lay out the nine game cards in a three by three grid with the pattern size facing up (question side down).
2. Divide players into two teams. One side will be Team “X” and the other Team “O”.
3. Each team gets one steal token.

Gameplay

1. Both teams roll the die. The team that rolls the higher number takes “X” and goes first.
2. Team X chooses a question card, flips it, and rolls the die to determine which question to answer (question 5 and 10 on each card may require some extra thought before answering!).
3. Everyone on the team takes a turn answering the question. After answering, Team X flips the card back over and places an X game piece on it to mark the card as taken.
4. Team O then takes a turn. Continue taking turns until one team gets three in a row — tic tac VPFO!
5. Using the steal token: Unlike regular tic-tac-toe, each team can use their steal token to try to claim an opponent’s tile at any point of the game. Be strategic and have fun with it!

How to use the steal token

• Steal tokens should be used at the beginning of your turn, instead of choosing a question card.
• Place your steal token on the opponent’s question card you wish to steal. Flip it over, roll the die, and have your team answer the chosen question.
• After the question has been answered, the stealing team will then call out ‘even’ or ‘odds’ before rolling the die again.
• If the rolled number matches what is called out (i.e., an even number for even, odd for odd), the steal is successful! The stealing team leaves their steal token on the card, removes the opponent’s game piece, and replaces it with one of their own.
• If the numbers do not match, the tile is not stolen, and this turn is over. However, the steal token can be saved and used again in another round.
• NOTE: There are no “steal backs” and a tile can only be stolen once.

No teams required, just play in a group of two or more people to get to know each other better, one question at a time.

Set up and gameplay

1. Stack the game cards, pattern side facing up (question side down).
2. Starting at the top of the pile, pick up a card and roll the die to determine which question to answer.
3. After answering, return the card to the bottom of the deck.
4. Repeat until everyone answers three questions and learns something new about each other!
