Clinical trial program: Rapid COVID-19 testing opens in Irving K. Barber Learning Centre

UBC researchers are asking for your help and participation to assess the viability of a new rapid test, the SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Antigen Test. Help keep yourself, your community and all of Canada safer by getting tested using a new self-administered system. This is a research study, and rapid testing is only available to those that consent and are eligible to participate in the study.

Replacing an 800+Lbs Supply Fan Motor in Pulp and Paper Centre

Last weekend, the millwrights replaced a failed 60 horsepower 800+lbs supply fan motor so the electrical crew could reattach the electrical connections. The area(s) within the Pulp and Paper Centre were impacted and forced to stop their work until this unit was replaced and put back into service.

Update on Contacting Payroll

Payroll Operations is requesting that all payroll inquiries be submitted via the UBC self-service portal, effective September 1, 2021. Payroll will address the submitted tickets in order of priority, which will assist us in identifying issues impacting our processes as well as opportunities for long-term solutions.

Non-medical masks required in public indoor spaces on UBC campuses from August 25

As a result of a Public Health Order, effective August 25, 2021, non-medical masks are required for all indoor public areas at UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan, including lobbies, hallways, stairwells, elevators, classrooms and labs.

Our next steps for return to campus

We have all been following the news from the Provincial Government and have seen the recent messages from Santo Ono about the latest changes to COVID-19 public health guidance. We know our return to campus will need to be different than the plans we discussed at our VPFO all-staff town hall on July 15.

Bert Tempel joins Infrastructure Development as Project Coordinator

Bert joined UBC in 2001 with a sheet metal trades certification. He has spent 20 years in Building Operations’ Sheet Metal Shop where he developed extensive experience and knowledge in the construction of mechanical systems, building maintenance, HVAC systems renewal, and managed all metal related work on campus.

District Energy System (DES) Valve Optimization program

Since April 2021, Energy & Water Services has been undergoing a District Energy System (DES) valve optimization project across campus. This project was executed over two phases in 10 worksites and included 18 valves — starting with one of the most complex shutdowns next to the UBC Hospital.
