Safety Day was a huge success 

n October 4, Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHSC) Committee and Local Safety Team members across UBC gathered to network, celebrate and learn from our 16 vendor tables from our very own Campus Security and Emergency Management teams as well as sponsors and community partners.

Protect yourself from the flu

Starting October 11, 2022, Influenza (flu) vaccines will be available at community pharmacies across British Columbia. Book your flu vaccine through the provincial government’s Get Vaccinated system and locate a clinic on ImmunizeBC. For members of the UBC Community, there are pharmacies on campus where you will be able to receive your influenza vaccine.

Get Ready to ShakeOut

On October 20, 2022, practice how to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON at 10:20 a.m. during the annual Great BC ShakeOut. Tour UBC’s Earthquake Engineering Research Facility (EERF), and in the evening, attend the SAN ANDREAS movie screening complete with live scientific commentary from Natural Resources Canada Seismologist, Alison Bird. All events are free and open to the public.

Project teams are working diligently to minimize impact

Many construction projects have planned for noisy work to be completed during the summer months, however, due to delays in materials and resource shortages, some of the work is continuing into the fall and impacting students, faculty, and staff.

Construction begins on UBC’s Recreation Centre North

Construction is underway on a new recreation centre that will triple the amount of indoor fitness and recreation space at the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus. The new facility will feature three gyms, indoor track, and state-of-the-art fitness centre.

Facilities completing the annual Confined Space Rescue Team exercises

Facilities’ Energy & Water Services and Building Operations recently completed their annual Confined Space Rescue Team on-site exercises. Rescuers were presented with different scenarios that required them to take the necessary steps to recognize, evaluate and develop a rescue plan to successfully rescue an individual from a confined space. 

UBC receives the NAFA Clean Air Awards

Facilities received eight NAFA Clean Air Awards for UBC buildings this year — AMS Student Nest, UBC Aquatic Centre, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS), Forest Sciences Centre, Henry Angus Building, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and Wayne & William White Engineering Design Centre.

Envisio drop-in sessions

To support the VPFO community in providing quarterly updates in Envisio, VPFO’s strategic & business planning tool, Operational Excellence will be offering online, 30-minute drop-in sessions in October and November.

Migrating to TouchNet, the new digital payment solution at UBC

With the transition to Workday, the university has identified TouchNet as the new solution that will facilitate all digital payment transactions across all UBC campuses.
